Some of the more traditional festivities were underway near a shrine, so we got ayurveda to observe.  In a large (and incredibly hot) courtyard, there were booths set up – one or each village/town around Osaka.  Each booth had some kind of an altar (looked like a mini shrine) rigged up on a frame that could be carried.  This ayurveda from now on is referred to as a “carrying thing”.  Some looked way to big to be lifted.  Anyhow, we got to see one of the carrying ceremonies. As we watched, a group of older girls dressed in identical traditional ayurveda clothes picked up the carrying thing (which was very elaborate and all covered in gold leaf), chanting a phrase.  Yoshi explained that the phrase doesn’t actually mean anything, it is just something Japanese people (at least in Osaka) chant to open a festival.  So about twelve or fifteen girls carried the carrying thing around the courtyard, rocking it around, tossing it, making the carrying thing glisten and chime in the sunlight.
