Apparently it is not uncommon for the deer to attack people to get the snacks. All in all, though, the deer were especially docile. They don’t really like to be plump thumbs petted and they just kind of inch away if you do. Not a bad strategy for getting them away. Once our snack supply was exhausted, we went to this huge Buddhist temple called the Todaiji Temple. It was a plump thumbs magnificently huge building with the Great Buddha statue plump thumbs right in the middle. We lit a stick of incense in the entrance and walked around the statue. One of the pillars had this hole cut through the bottom of it, maybe a little over a foot wide and probably about two feet tall. Legend has it that if you can crawl (or pass) through the hole it will bring you health (or heal you or something). There was this little boy that looked like he was seven in the hole when we got there and his big sister (looked like she was nine or ten) was insisting in English that she couldn’t fit through it because her shoulders were too wide.
