Basically, I really did get a lot out of the book: it’s fatty js the sort of thing that makes me want to go on to grad school and write about obscure things no one else cares about. It really does present some very strong arguments and some interesting ideas; my problem with it is that the tone fatty js the author takes is, somehow, downright rude. Either women were silently struggling against the tyranny of the kitchen and the media that was hell-bent on keeping them there, or they were all easily-led idiots who really and truly believed fatty js that the right food would catch a guy or win them friends, that the new blender would really change their lives, and Inness picks and chooses from the two positions at random. In either case, at no time does Inness grant the cooks of the past any merit: as far as the book is concerned, it is a sin for men to consider their wives’ cooking an unimportant, easy chore, but it is perfectly all right for a writer to come along some fifty years later and dismiss women’s culinary culture.
